N2N in 9News
The following story was retrieved from the 9News website. This story ran on Tuesday, November 17 in the evening news.
LOVELAND - As a grandmother, Laura Brown knows how to turn a house into a home, but she never knew "Home Sweet Home" could turn sour so fast.
"It's something I never ever dreamed [could] happen to us," she said.
Late last year, the family business began to struggle, which put Brown and her husband in a desperate position.
"We made our [mortgage] payments until December," Brown recalled.
After they stopped, their Loveland home went into foreclosure.
"I can't tell you what it's like every waking moment to have that hanging over your head," she said.
The Browns pleaded with their lender, GMAC, to refinance, but to no avail.
"We just ran into one brick wall after another," she said.
Brown began to look around for help, but a lot of the offers that came in looked suspicious, until a local real estate agent got in touch with her.
The agent told her to call Neighbor to Neighbor, a non-profit organization that specializes in housing counseling.
Neighbor to Neighbor counselor Meaghanne Oresjo took on Brown's case - for free.
"You should never pay for housing advice," Oresjo said.
Oresjo negotiated with GMAC on behalf of Brown.
"There's a lot of information out there so talking to someone who can answer all of your questions and can be an advocate for you is the absolute best option," Oresjo said.
Oresjo managed to secure a loan modification for Brown - a move that has allowed the Browns to stay in their home.
"It's just so important to know your home is some place to go and feel safe," Brown said.
Everyone in Colorado has the same access to help Brown found. If you're looking for such advice, call the Colorado Foreclosure Prevention Hotline. The number is 1-877-601-HOPE.
